Background of the Study
Network reliability is a crucial factor in ensuring continuous connectivity and service availability in academic institutions. Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, has a growing reliance on its network infrastructure to support educational, administrative, and research activities. As the university continues to expand its user base and digital infrastructure, network downtime or disruptions could have a significant impact on academic activities. A redundant network system provides a solution to ensure high availability, by designing the network such that a failure in one part of the network does not affect the overall performance (Ogundipe et al., 2023).
Network redundancy involves the addition of extra components or paths that ensure data can be rerouted in the event of a failure, thus preventing service interruptions. Redundant systems in campus networks reduce downtime, improve resilience, and ensure continuous access to vital resources (Musa & Hamza, 2024). Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, currently faces occasional network failures due to insufficient redundancy. This study aims to design a redundant network system that will enhance the reliability and availability of the university's network.
By addressing these challenges, this study will provide the university with a more robust network infrastructure capable of supporting critical educational services without significant downtime.
Statement of the Problem
The current network infrastructure at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, lacks sufficient redundancy, which leads to frequent downtimes and disruptions in network services. The absence of backup systems or alternative network routes exacerbates the problem, affecting students, faculty, and administrative operations. The university’s growing reliance on digital tools necessitates a network system that can provide continuous, uninterrupted service to ensure smooth academic and administrative functions.
Objectives of the Study
To design a redundant network system for Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, to improve network reliability.
To analyze the impact of implementing a redundant network system on network downtime and performance.
To provide recommendations on optimizing network redundancy for better resource utilization.
Research Questions
How can a redundant network system be designed to ensure high availability and reliability at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi?
What is the impact of implementing a redundant network system on reducing network downtimes and improving performance?
What are the most effective strategies for optimizing the redundancy features within the university’s network infrastructure?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on designing and implementing a redundant network system for Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. The scope includes evaluating the current network architecture and identifying areas that require redundancy. Limitations may include the availability of data regarding the existing network infrastructure, the cost of implementing redundancy, and potential challenges related to integrating the new system with the current network setup.
